COREtec Quarter Round Installation and Frequently Asked Questions

May 17, 2024

COREtec Quarter Round

Quarter Round are an easy way to give your flooring a polished and professional finish. In a recent video by COREtec Floors, They demonstrate how to install quarter round effectively.

Installation Process:

  1. Measure the length needed. For corners, cut the quarter round at 45 degree angles for inside corners using a miter saw or in this instance miter cutters.
  2. Place the cut piece into the corner to cover the expansion gap. Use a nail gun to attach the quarter round to the baseboard, not the floor to avoid restricting floor expansion.
  3. Nail the quarter round every 12 to 18 inches.
  4. Ensure there are no gaps at the corners and that the quarter round is flush with the floor.
  5. Repeat the process along the entire wall for a consistent finish.

Tips and Tricks:

  • Avoid Gaps: Ensure the quarter round is NOT too tight against the the floor. If the quarter round is tight it will prevent the floor from expanding and contracting properly.
  • Nail to Baseboardsnot to the floor, to prevent expansion issues.

By following these steps, you can achieve a professional and clean finish to your flooring project with ease.

Frequently Asked Questions: Here are some questions we get asked about quarter rounds.

  1. What types of Quarter Rounds are there?

Color Coordinating Quarter Rounds: Comes pre-finished to coordinate with your floors, saving you time and effort.

Unfinished Quarter Rounds: Can be stained to match your flooring.

Primed White Quarter Round: Ready to be be painted to match your baseboard or any color.

Base Shoe: While it is not a quarter round, a base shoe can be used instead for a clear or less bulky look. They typically measure 3/4 inch by 1/2 inch wide.

  2. Is it better to use a Quarter Round or Baseboard?
It is widely viewed that installing the quarter round underneath the baseboard is a cleaner look. However, using a quarter round and baseboard is more traditional.

  3. Should I use a Base Shoe instead of a Quarter Round?
If you are matching to the floor it is better to use a quarter round. If you are matching a baseboard it is better to use a Base Shoe (3/4" high by 1/2 wide strip).
  4. My installer is pushing me to use a quarter round instead of removing the baseboards, what should I do?
Taking off baseboards can be risky as the installers could break during the removal process and can lead to added costs. They may need to be repainted and many flooring installers may not offer painting services. This is why it can sometimes be better to use quarter rounds on top of the baseboards to save time and money.

  5. Should the Quarter Rounds match the floor or the baseboard
The current trend is match the color of the baseboard. Some prefer to match the floor due to preference or ease.
